True Story The Deverells Book 1 edition by Jayne Fresina Romance eBooks
This story begins with a bang whereby our main guy, True Deverell, and our young 18 year old heroine, Olivia Westcott, collide outside her father's offices. We learn that Mr. Deverell is a rough man who has lived a rough life and has decided to divorce his wife. Olivia is fascinated by the man as she recalls she had stated emphatically that when she grew up she would marry the scandalous True Deverell, much to the dismay of her stiffnecked Aunt Jane.Fast forward ten years in the future. Our Olivia has buried three husbands, she's got a jerk for a step brother and she needs a break. She's accepted a job as a secretary for a gentleman (if you could call him that) who has decided to pen his memoirs and she's on her way to one of his homes way out in Cornwall near the ocean. It seems the man is none other than Mr. True Deverell and he is of course expecting the secretary to be a man. Won't he be surprised when our bluestocking Olivia arrives.
He's full of himself, he's a rascal through and through and has lived his life as he's seen fit never caring where the chips fell. He has legitimate and illegitimate children, but we'll give him credit for caring for all of them. In fact, he's probably the most stabilizing force in their lives for whatever it's worth.
I enjoyed this book, but in truth, Olivia's personality was way more attractive and fascinating to me than True's was. Although I do enjoy a rake reformed, True was just a bit out there for me. I suppose at the end of the day, he was just too far gone in his previous debauched lifestyle to the point, it was stretching my imagination that he would/could change into a stable love for Olivia. Yes, of course, he does reform, but somehow it just seemed far out to me and that's saying a lot because in this genre, we see our heroes reform all the doggone time - otherwise most of us wouldn't even read these books.
I know I'm in the minority, but there it is. I do, however, look forward to reading the next book in this series - assuming there is a Book #2.

True Story The Deverells Book 1 edition by Jayne Fresina Romance eBooks Reviews
I just reread this 3.5 months after the first read. I thoroughly enjoyed it the first time and possibly enjoyed it even more the second. Jayne Fresina has a wonderfully refreshing writing style, fantastic imagination, and wonderfully original characters with breadth and depth. Her language feels effortless and authentic with witty dialogue, and the story has very solid historical anchors. Some of her plot devices seem a little fantastical but, overall, the story is so well done that I just don't care. Places for improvement? Maybe some of the transitions, some simple editing/typographical errors, and as with many novels I read, I wish I could enjoy one more chapter of the HEA that it took the whole book to achieve. ) Heat level is subjective. Two or three graphic scenes. Oh - on the subject of heat, it appears that the Ladies Most Unlikely series in general leans towards "clean" romance (no graphic sex) while the True series leans more towards steamy. But, unless heat level or lack thereof is your deal-breaker, the stories are so brilliantly written and the characters so vividly drawn that you come out feeling happily satisfied no matter what. Overall, True Story with a happy smile on my face, a growing appetite to read more Fresina, and looking forward to my next reread of True Story! )
Exceptional novel. Beautifully written; crisp, witty dialogue; humor; marvelous, very complex H (True) and h (Olivia); extremely interesting plot. No balls and teas here, but a really good story.
A foundling who had no family in his youth, True is now over 40, the immensely wealthy owner of a gambling club, has a passel of offspring (the book says 8, I counted 7...but who knows;) is divorced!; and has decided to write his memoirs. He needs a secretary....right?
Here comes Olivia! She's no baby (28), has already survived three husbands and there's a little cloud of suspicion there. When she was 10 she decided she'd marry True Deverell and she has arrived to help him write his memoirs.
I love True and Olivia! True is brilliant, tough, arrogant, sensitive, and loves his children. Olivia is smart, has a sense of mischief, and embodies pluck and self-reliance. These two people are great! Their maneuverings, their wonderful dialogue are exceptional...truly a sight to behold)
Smoothly flowing prose, quietly developing sweet romance. A love scene that was beautiful, intense, very sensual, and funny, with no cheesiness about it...and Olivia had rules.
I was a bit startled by a revelation late in the story but easily decided I'd go with it because it fit. It's something that can always be addressed in an Author's Note in a future edition. No big deal.
I was very briefly alarmed to find no epilogue.....this story cries for one. Then it dawned on me -duh- that this is Book One.
Wonderful story. Wonderful characters. I loved this one.
Enjoy your reading! )
