This book starts off okay. I wasn't amazed by the story, but it was an entertaining read. It was well-paced, made you ask the right questions, and had a good amount of tension. And good news: both Julianna and Pax were likable characters. All through the book there was this thread of "what crap did Julianna get herself caught up in as a child that seems to be following her still?" The answer takes this book from the average, bubblegum New Adult story and drops it into a dark, twisted place. If you like dark and twisted, you'll like this book. I like dark and twisted. The problem is I didnt like the dark twist in this book. It felt all wrong. it felt like Arden said "I want to write a NA romance but throw something different in there. What can I do that hasn't been done?" And she threw the reader the sick twist at the end of novel that (to me) did not fit the storyline.
Let me be clear: I'm all for gut-wrenching pasts that the main character has to overcome, or real life problems creating psychological road blocks on the path to a good old-fashioned HEA. I love seeing what an author can put out there that makes me go "Wow. How raw, or real, or mind-blowing."
I just don't care for "WTH did I just read?!" moments at the end of a book, where the ending doesn't feel like it makes sense based on how the story began, or the genre of the book. It's just my opinion, but the twist at the end of this book ... it felt ... off.
That being said, the book itself was allright. The pacing was okay; the writing was slightly above average.
Would I recommend it to my friend who's looking for an amazing read that will leave their socks blown off? No.
Did I hate it? No.
Was it entertaining? Yes.
For what it cost, I wasn't disappointed. It just didn't make my "must reread" list. Nor did it inspire me to follow the author into any future books.

I was hesitant to read this book because it was a 4 star and some of the 3 and lower star reviews had me nervous. I was very pleasantly surprised that it was exactly the book I needed to get me over the slump that I was in from reading two other really bad books back to back. This book had me interested the whole time and, although I do agree with some of the reviewers that it was surprisingly horrific, I thought that added to the story rather than detracted. It wasn't a typical romance book that I'm getting tired of reading the same plot over and over again. The romance part was the same, but the beginning of the book to the end had me interested and made the romance work in this story. Pax is that BBF that reviewers talk about. Jules has had a rough life, but it's really neat to see the type of person she turned out to be as a result of it. Would I recommend this book. Heck yes, but as one reviewer said, be cautious that at the end there are a few pages of something graphic that might make you squeemish. It's definitely a read again book for me, and there are many books that I will not say that about. Kudos to the author!
I loved the cover of the book. That alone made me decide to purchase the book even though the rating was so so. The storyline had a good flow and the chemistry was naturally developed. I wouldn't consider the relationship between Pax and Jules an insta loved. I felt the emotions between characters and relatable. I was really sad how Jules had a hard life growing up. One thing that I liked the best was the romance development. Pax was so hot. Not crazy about how Pax reacted to Aria's behavior romantically. The reason why I didn't give this a 5 was the ending was a bit rushed. An epilogue would have been nice to tie it up. Also, some of the Jules past recalls the first two was unnecessary. Overall, I recommend this book since it has relatable, interesting plot, hot alpha foot player as the H, and a good HE A. Go ahead give this book a shot.
Jules is all alone in the world.
When her grandmother was alive, they used to make things work together. Life was tough and sometimes they could barely manage but at least they had each other. Now she is gone and Jules is in college.
But her past is far from behind her. Images haunt her. Some people are looking for her. She knows she is in danger... But she still falls for Pax. He is not what she expected of a jock. Sure, he is gorgeous, but he has history too. Depth. And in another way, his past is far from over too.
And now, their pasts are going to collude with their present...
I don't know what I expected. More babbling maybe. But Jules is special. She has a voice that is different from most girls in books. Also, she has been through different experiences that haunts her.
I really liked her voice. She was a lot more reasonable than other main characters. It's just that I didn"t expect a romance book to turn into some kind of thriller at the end. I found the thriller somewhat lacking. I do like thriller, but I need a very competent main character to uphold it. And Jules is a great romance character but she is not a great thriller character. Even Pax lacked the charisma of "the savior of the day" though he was more convincing than Jules.
All in all, it was still a good book and I would recommend it. Just be aware of the drastic change of genre at the end of the book.
Sorry, I really wanted to like this book but the extremely horrific events described so graphically at the end of this book completely wrecked any and all fondness and connection I had with the story. I felt truly ill and was repulsed by the events and the way they were described. It is telling to my preferred style of book that I was baffled that the author chose to describe with such detail the torture that befell our heroine, but completely skipped over the sex scene- it felt like the book was almost totally DARK and there was no fun, sexy, lightness included.
This book needed a big warning at the start! I have a pretty high tolerance for violence and aggression in my books but this ended up turning my stomach and I had to force myself to finish the book. Don't read this one if you are faint of heart!
