I have enjoyed other books by Michelle Diener, so I bought this novel with high hopes of a good read. It began very well, set in the intriguing court of King Henry the eighth, with engaging characters, and a puzzling mystery to solve. Sadly the plot spiraled endlessly with too many unnecessary convolutions and repetitions. I found myself skimming sections just to get to the point. Though I liked the main characters, their relationship developed too speedily. Also I stumbled over significant lapses in logic, where the characters failed to take basic precautions, despite having been attacked numerous times before.

Eventually I did plow through to the end of the book, but I may not wish to read the rest of the series. Perhaps I'll decide after I read the short story that follows this novel. Since I've already purchased it, I might as well give it a chance. In a Treacherous Court was Ms Diener's first published work, and as such it does exhibit many strengths; a strong grasp of setting, likable characters, and a smooth writing style. I feel her plotting and pacing improved with later books which I enjoyed more. If you're interested in historical mystery romance, you might want to try The Emperor's Conspiracy, the first in Ms. Diener's Regency series, and a superior story to this one, (in my opinion).

Diener creates an incredibly strong female heroine whose independence is in step with her unusual profession as an artist during that period in history. This is not sappy historical fiction, expect some realistic violence during moments of conflict, again appropriate to the time. A fast and enjoyable read.
It held my interest because of the author's writing style -not too wordy or modern for the time period and good flow/pacing. It is a bit action and a bit of suspense set in the time of Henry VIII. And of course for me, any author who focuses more on the male character's point of view always gets high marks from me. I give this 4stars only because I like my plots a little more intricate and my volumes more bulky so l can really be transported. It won't be my last book from this author - I ask only that she increase her pages.
Loved this story. Plot never lagged, with lots of twists and turns. The hero Parker was a dream. I love when the heroes seem almost invincible and always seem to be one step ahead of the villains. He was intelligent as well as a very deadly swordsman. Our heroine Suzanne was just perfect for him with just the right blend of femininity and self-reliance. While she was still a creature of her times, there were areas where she tried to buck tradition and throw off societal restraints. I can't wait to read their further exploits together.
This is the first in trilogy centered around the court of Henry VIII through the eyes and experiences of a manuscript illuminator, who happens to be female. I found all three volumes well written, tightly crafted, and well supported with historical details. In fact, I had started to read the second in the series "Keeper of the King's Secrets", and stopped, bought the first and third and then read them straight thru - which I recommend to anyone reading.
I bought this because it was about a woman artist in a time that was rare. That figured into the overall plot, which was a romance/ mystery.
The sections on drawing, painting and creating art are small but accurate.
I enjoyed all the characters and really liked the book. Overall I might even give it a 4.5. It had a nice historical summation of the characters in an epilogue and questions at the end which would make it a great selection for book clubs.
My only downgrading was that I felt it ended very abruptly. Perhaps the author plans another with these characters.
I love historical romances! I read all three books in this author's regency series and loved them. I really liked this book, too. The heroine was quite compelling - beautiful and talented and ahead of her time. The hero was also quite compelling - handsome and strong and loyal. They had great chemistry. I loved the complex storyline based in fact, and the author's writing style. Looking forward to the next book in the series!
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, and I have pretty high standards when it comes to reading books that fit within that genre. I especially love books written in the era of King Henry VIII.

I started this book with high hopes after seeing the amazing reviews other people had left, but was left wishing it had had more. More history, more connections and more believablility. While I liked the characters as individuals, the relationship between Susanna and Parker seemed somewhat forced and I found it difficult to accept it.

I was hoping I'd be more entranced by the mystery at the heart of the story, but found myself easily distracted and not very into the plot.
