Kissing Max Holden is very slow and very sweet. I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for quite a bit, and while I did have some issues with it, it was still a cute and meaningful read.

Jill and Max’s friendship has never been easy. They fall in and out of love with each other faster than people change underwear, but the timing has never been right. So when the story starts out with a full-on make-out session between the two, it’s the perfect launch for a helluva lot of drama. Exhibit A: Max was kind of, sort of drunk when it happened. Exhibit B: Max kind of, sort of had a girlfriend at the time.

So I’ve never been a big fan of cheating stories. I mercilessly DNFed a book named Mercy, tore down a chicklit called Sleeping Arrangements, and I have a few thoughts on my mind about Étienne St Clair from Anna and the French Kiss, as well. It’s also really typical that the girlfriend is a bitch, because otherwise there’s no reason for us to root for Jill and Max. So yes, even though the girlfriend is supposed to be this terrible person, I found it hard to root for our protagonists.

They did have a lot of chemistry, though – the author definitely came through when she decided to put “Kissing” in the title. It is a kissing book, and the more heated scenes are good enough to shoot tingles down everyone’s spines. And when you have a less-than-ideal home situation on both sides of the equation, it is not hard to imagine that they would seek refuge in each other’s arms (and mouths).

I did appreciate the fact that Jill’s storyline parallelled with troubles in her own parents’ marriage, and how she was able to use that to evaluate her own actions as The Other Woman. I also enjoyed watching her relationship with her stepmother grow because of these issues. And though I often grew really weary of her on-again-off-again fling with Max – seriously, sometimes this book felt so much longer than 304 pages – it was good to see that things didn’t immediately become sunshine and rainbows, both as casual friends and as boyfriend and girlfriend. The hard topics are handled quite well.

One more thing I really loved was the fact that Jill had a passion for baking, and therefore described people like pastries. For instance, there was a character who was described as being like a crème brûlée – soft and sweet on the inside, but in order to get there, you have to crack a hard wall first. I thought those little nuggets were a really cute touch, and all the baking made Jill a softer and more caring character.

Second read and, yep, still love this book. It’s a sure bet for contemporary romance fans, but it's also about family dynamics, a subplot that's particularly well done. The writing is beautiful, characters flawed but real, and plot fast paced. I'll admit I wasn't on Team Max at the beginning—he's a bit of a loser and a total mess. But his transformation throughout the book was great, and he completely won me over. Best to read this with a sweet treat—Jilly’s baking is going to make you crave cake and cookies big time.

Fans of Huntley Fitzpatrick, Morgan Matson, and Jessi Kirby will adore this book.

Who doesn’t love a the hot boy next door? I thought I was gonna get a fluffy, summer contemporary when I started this but I ended up with so much more. Kissing Max Holden has so much heart and depth to it, I was completely blown away. The characters are wonderful, they are flawed, vulnerable and realistic. Jillian was a great MC. She was scared, brave and strong. I loved reading about her relationship with Max, even though it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Their connection was real and beautiful. This is my second Katy Upperman book and I’m in love! She has become an auto buy for me! My only complaint is this book made really hungry for baked goods. (
Kissing Max Holden is a lovely book. The author has an eye for detail that pulls you right into the lives of Jilly and her super swoon-worthy neighbor Max. They've been friends forever until they grew up a little and simply weren't anymore. Max is going off the rails because of family issues while Jilly is laser-focused on what she wants to be a top chef. They are not in sync at all, until they kiss and things get complicated.

I don't want to include any spoilers, so I'll not give away too much... but here are a few of my favorite things about this book.

I love that all of the characters (adults and young adults) deal with their issues in authentic ways. People make big mistakes (in life and in fiction) and there aren't easy answers to big mistakes. These wonderfully genuine characters deal with their world in a way that is compelling and realistic. The characters are complex in all the right ways. Max is not a uni-dimensional "bad boy" and I love that Jilly cares for him while also standing up for herself. She's the perfect mix of sweet and strong.

This book has everything -- a gripping story about families, sincere friendships, a heavenly romance -- oh, and completely delectable baking references!

How do you proceed when your neighbor, who already has a girlfriend (a rather nasty one, BTW), climbs through your bedroom window late at night? This is how the story of Jillian and Max begins. Best friends when they were younger, with their dads even better friends, things got tattered and blurry along the way. Then Max's dad had a serious stroke, confining him to a wheelchair, an event that forced everyone into a strained 'let's pretend' world.
Add in that Jillian's dream is a fancy pastry school in NYC, her dad and stepmom are expecting a baby after a long period of trying via in vitro fertilization, etc., and they're fighting more and more. When Will and Jillian kiss in her bedroom, she knows it's a bad decision, especially when they're caught by her dad.
What ensues involves an impossible to ignore attraction between them, secrets becoming unraveled and Jillian learning that she's been betrayed in a way that hurts and angers her. How she deals with her growing attraction to Max and being betrayed are complicated by yet another unexpected event involving her stepmom. All these elements are delightfully blended into a hard to put down YA romance. Highly suggested for teens liking romance, especially with intrigue and very likable characters.
